Why Reclined Pigeon Rocks

Why Reclined Pigeon Rocks

Reclined Pigeon pose – also known as Eye of the Needle – is a fantastic post-run and cycling stretch and also a great Pigeon variation that is kinder on the knees than the more traditional version of Pigeon pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana).

As well as particularly targeting the hips, glutes and lower back this is also very helpful for stretching the IT band (illiotibial band), therefore improving your performance.

I found this pose and Legs Up The Wall especially helpful after running the Brighton Half Marathon in February this year. I had no soreness the next day. (NB – Click here for a Legs Up The Wall video where I show you how to get into the pose).

That said, even if you don’t run or cycle this pose can be of help if you spend a lot of time sitting – I imagine that includes most of us! :)

Reclined Pigeon can also be good for easing sciatic pain. Speaking from my own experience of sciatic pain due to having spondylolisthesis I have found this pose to be incredibly beneficial.

Aim to hold this stretch for at least 5 breaths but ideally longer. Work up to holding this stretch for 3-5 minutes on each side.

In this short video filmed at evolve, I show you how to get into Reclined Pigeon.

Lotus Mudra Love

Lotus Mudra Love

Lotus Mudra drawingCultivate love and affection with Lotus Mudra this Valentine’s

Mudras are symbolic hand gestures that can have an influence on the energies of your body and consequently, your mood. The word ‘mudra’ means ‘sealing in the energy’ in Sanskrit.

Lotus Mudra is the mudra of the heart. You can use this mudra to promote love and affection and also to ease loneliness.

How to practice:

Bring your palms together at your heart centre. Keeping the base of your palms together, fan your fingers out and bring the tip of your little fingers and thumbs to touch to form your open lotus blossom (as pictured). Hold here for four breaths.

After four breaths, close your lotus into a bud by bringing your hands back together with the base of your palms and the pads of your thumbs and all your fingers touching. Then turn your hands (turning palms towards you) placing all the fingernails of both your hands on top of each other, then the backs of your fingers, then the backs of your hands.

From here, turn your fingers in towards you then down. Let your hands hang down for a few breaths.

Bring your hands back to your lotus bud, then open into your lotus blossom.

Repeat this several times.

Hand Wash Cold

Hand Wash Cold

Over the course of 2013 and 2014 on my U Can Yoga website I featured (mostly) yoga related books that I’ve really enjoyed and wanted to share with you. Book of the Month took a bit of a sabbatical in the latter half of 2014, but I am happy to say it has returned for 2015 and you’ll be able to find a new book recommendation each month on the dedicated Book of the Month page over at U Can Yoga. For anyone who has missed the titles featured so far, I will be including some my previous ‘Books of the Month’ here on this blog over the course of the year. In the meantime, here is the Book of the Month for January 2015 – Hand Wash Cold by Karen Maezen MIiller. I hope you enjoy:

Hand Wash Cold: Care Instructions For An Ordinary Life by Karen Maezen Miller

“Happiness is simple. Everything we do to find it is complicated.” – Karen Maezen Miller

Could you imagine that the simplicity of household chores can become
opportunities for life lessons, self-examination and selflessness?

A friend lent me Hand Wash Cold last year and it turned out to be one of the best books I read in 2014. The author, Karen Maezen Miller is a Zen Buddhist priest and here, via a mix of personal anecdotes, insights and Zen wisdom, she writes about how changing our perceptions can help us find joy in the lives we already have, rather than thinking that fulfilment and bliss are somewhere ‘out there’. I admired the author’s openness about some of the difficult times in her past and acknowledging the self-absorption and ambition of her youth on the way to her finding steadiness in the life she has now. A wonderful read which manages to be both profound and playful. A great reminder that true happiness really comes from within and that it is possible to fall in love with the life you have today.

Chunky Kale & Vegetable Soup

Chunky Kale & Vegetable Soup

Chunky Kale & Vegetable Soup simmering on the stovetop

Here's some I made earlier - Chunky Kale & Vegetable Soup simmering on the stovetop

It’s a wet, cold February in London and in this kind of weather I crave comforting soups. Sally Parkes shared this recipe with me and it’s one of my favourites to make at the moment. I’ve been doing a bit more writing at home lately, working on a script, so it’s perfect for lunch and also nice for when I get home from teaching yoga in the evenings. It’s tasty as it is, though sometimes I like to serve this with quinoa. You could try it with rice too.

They always have some fantastic soups on the menu at Florence House in Seaford where I will be teaching with Sally on our twice-yearly Relax and Restore Retreat from 14-16th February. I’m really looking forward to a weekend of delicious, nourishing, hearty vegetarian food. We get to have (healthy) dessert too :) . There are still a few places left if you’d like to join us for a weekend of Yoga, Pilates and Relaxation at this lovely Sussex venue. There will also be a range of treatments on hand with therapist Jo, so you can pamper yourself with a massage too. Find out more about the retreat and details of how to book here: Relax & Restore Retreat – 14-16th Feb 2014.

Here’s that soup recipe for you :)

Chunky Kale & Vegetable Soup
Serves 4-6

With vitamin, mineral and phytonutrient packed kale, heart-healthy garlic and fibre-filled and cholesterol-lowering beans, this soup really packs a nutritional punch.

Ingredients:
Half a tablespoon of olive oil (I’ve substituted with coconut oil)
1 small red onion
1-2 garlic cloves
1 large bunch of kale
1-2 large carrots
1 stalk of celery and inner leaves
2 courgettes
½ teaspoon of pepper flakes
5 fresh sage leaves
2 large tomatoes (or tin chopped tomatoes)
1 tin of cannellini beans
2 or 3 pints of water depending of desired level of consistency

Method:
Chop onions, garlic, carrots, celery and sauté with oil, sage and pepper flakes.

Chop tomatoes, courgettes and kale and add them to the pot. Rinse beans and add them to the pot too. Mix to coat the vegetables and beans in oil. Add water and bring to the boil..

Once boiling, lower the heat and simmer for 45 minutes.

Serve on its own or for a more substantial meal, over quinoa or brown rice.

Enjoy! :)
